Wedding Invitation Size: How to Choose the Canvas for Your Dream Invites

When you’re wedding planning, your Google searches feel endless. When do I send out my Save the Dates and invitations? What are the most popular wedding invitation trends? Do I want print or digital cards? Our team is here to help take the guesswork out of the process. If you are already leaning toward printing wedding invitations, you might be curious about how you start designing your own — and how sizing works. In this wedding invitation size guide, we will walk couples through the typical wedding invitation size, and what you can do to make yours stand out.

As you read on, you’ll learn more about sizing options, complete with a wedding invitation size chart, and which types are most common among wedding couples today. When you’ve selected the best option for you, prepare to look forward to all of the oohs and ahhs you’ll receive when guests get your one-of-kind wedding invitations in the mail.

Wedding Invitation Size Chart: Comparing Your Options

If you’re unsure about where to start, it’s best to understand the various options you have to choose from. There are three basic styles: portrait, landscape, and square. When it comes to your invites and envelopes, this is the wedding invitation size chart to follow:

The below wedding invitation size chart shows what is available when you build your invites on the Bliss & Bone website, but custom sizing and shapes are also possible.

So, what exactly is the typical wedding invitation size? On this wedding invitation size chart, that’s a 5 x 7-inch card and envelope, which is also referred to as an A7 portrait wedding invitation size. Other popular styles are A9 for a slightly larger look (8.5 x 5.5 inches) or A6 for a smaller option (6.25 x 4.5).

By contrast, the wedding invitation size in other countries is often measured in centimeters and the A series or square-sized invites are most commonly offered.

How Your Wedding Invitation Size Affects the Overall Cost

Standard sizing usually comes with standard pricing, so it makes the most sense to go with a classic option if you are trying to spend less on your stationery. Of course, you can always deviate from the “standard” wedding invitation size, but that will likely hike up your price.

Beyond the wedding invitation size guide, there are other factors you need to weigh for the overall cost of your stationery. This may include extra customizations, bonus features like grommets, specialty paper, luxury printing styles like embossing or letterpress, and more. When you choose a more irregular or unique wedding invitation size, you will also need to purchase an envelope that might lead to extra fees, too. It’s also suggested that couples order an additional five to 10 invitations, just in case there are any mailing issues or if you want to hold onto some as keepsakes. After all, you don’t want to run out!

As you are considering different ideas, including wedding invitation size, you need to have an understanding of how much you plan to spend. Before you make your choice, schedule a conversation with your partner and planner (an optional, but highly recommended vendor). You’ll want to share which vendors and other wedding-related things you want to prioritize, and go from there while mapping out the best wedding invitation size, style, and more.

Examples of Wedding Invitation Size Ideas from Bliss & Bone

Bliss & Bone is full of templates designed with varying options for your wedding invitation size. While most are presented as 5 x 7-inch styles, you can work with a dedicated designer to come up with exactly what you’re looking for. Here are some of the most popular designs and orientations, with the wedding invitation size recommended for each:

  • Portrait: The Mila Wedding Invitation is a portrait-style wedding invite, and the pre-programmed wedding invitation size is A7 Portrait, or 5 x 7 inches.
  • Landscape: The Mila Wedding Invitation II turns the Mila on its head — literally. Set as an A7 Landcape wedding invitation size, or 7 x 5-inch design, you can see how rotating a portrait can give it an entirely new look as a landscape invite.
  • Square: While most of the designs at Bliss & Bone are prepared with a portrait or landscape wedding invitation size, square cards are also on the table. Chat with a designer about how you can review samples and explore creating your own.

There are so many ways to envision your wedding invitations, and determining the best size and style is one of the first steps you’ll take. If you don’t see exactly what you’re looking for, don’t hesitate to reach out and learn more about what our team can help you create.

Building Your Perfect Wedding Invitations with the Experts at Bliss & Bone

When you and your partner want to build (or even test out building) your wedding invitations, you can start by reviewing your options of printed wedding invitations. Here’s what the step-by-step process looks like:

  1. Choose your favorite wedding invitation template online. There are so many elegant wedding invites you can look through, and then you’ll want to select your favorite. Click on “the one” and then select “Customize + Price.” This will take you to the wedding invitation builder.
  2. Adjust your wedding invitation size, color, and quantity. The first step within the custom builder is to select how many and the best wedding invitation size for you. Quantity options go up to 400 cards, and there’s a dropdown menu with the sizes available for that particular template. If you have any other sizing questions or comments, you can share that with your designer at a later stage.
  3. Change the text color on the wedding invite. After handing the features on the card, you have the option to add or change the color (or two) on your wedding invite.
  4. Make decisions about your envelope. When everything related to the card is done, you can make adjustments to the envelopes, too. Make your selection for the quantity, paper type and color, and opt in or out on envelope printing and envelope liners. When you’re prepared to move on, click “Next” in the bottom right corner of your screen.
  5. Submit the text you want to see on the card. While digital wedding invites show a full preview of your design, you need to fill out details for your printed wedding invites in the “Details” portion. At this step, you can type the text you want to see on the invite and choose whether you want to add an insert card, reply card, and reply envelope. At the bottom, the “Notes to Designer” may also feature a request to change up the wedding invitation size. When you’ve submitted everything, click “Next” in the bottom left.
  6. Review your order. Look over everything and then checkout. Share your credit card details and then prepare to receive your proofs within two to three business days.
  7. Give your final approval and purchase your invites. After you’ve received your proof, you have the opportunity to approve or ask for another round. You get two rounds of proofs with your order, and you can share any special requests you’d like, down to the wedding invitation size. If everything is approved, your design will go into production and they’ll be shipped 12 to 15 business days later.

This is the standard process for couples ordering printed wedding invites through Bliss & Bone. If you’re operating on a shorter timeline, rush services are available. Here are the timelines for “Rush” and “Lightning” shipping:

  • Rush: Receive the first proof within two business days, revisions after one business day, and production will take eight to 10 business days. There is a 25 percent upcharge with your purchase.
  • Lightning: Receive the first proof within one business day, revisions after one business day, and production will take seven business days. There is a 50 percent upcharge with your purchase.

Think through your wedding planning timeline and see how it’ll work for you. In most cases, you’ll want to send them out six to eight weeks prior to your wedding day, and that does not include production time and shipping to your home. Before you create these, you’ll also want to check off a few more items on your to-do list. Here are a few to keep on your radar:

  1. Design your wedding website. Your wedding invitation will go out after you’ve shared details about your wedding website. You can share this in a wedding announcement or through your Save the Date. This is generally designed about six to nine months before your wedding.
  2. Customize your Save the Date. These give the basic details about your upcoming celebration, and they are also designed and sent out six to nine months prior to the big day.

These are the steps preceding your wedding invitations, and this really just covers your stationery-related products. In addition to these steps, you’ll also need to figure out your budgeting goals, book your venue and set your date (or dates, if you’re hosting a multi-day celebration), and hire a planner.

Sizing Details for Other Stationery Items

As you prepare to order the right wedding invitation size, you might be curious about the other aspects and items within your stationery suite. Below, we’re sharing the other must-haves and typical or “standard” sizing for each one:

  • Wedding invitations: The typical wedding invitation size options include A9, A7, 5.5 Square, and 6.25 Square.
  • Save the Dates: A7, A6, and 5.5 Square are the most popular options among wedding couples.
  • Reply Cards: Because of their smaller size, 4-Bar and A2 are best for reply cards.
  • Inserts: Same goes for inserts, which are often prepared in A7, A6, A2, or 4-Bar formats.
  • Menus: Planning to leave menus on each guest’s plate at the reception? A9, A7, 5.5 Square, 6.25 Square, and #10 are our recommended choices.
  • Programs: Wedding couples love sharing more details about their ceremony, and A9 and #10 are best for these pieces of stationery.

Keep in mind that you’ll need to order envelopes that can accommodate the wedding invitation size, plus other items you want to package (for example, the reply cards and inserts). This wedding invitation size guide can serve as a clear indicator of the types of stationery you’ll want to add to your order.

All of this said, these are the most common — not the required sizing for each item. If you are interested in deviating from these standard sizes, again, all you need to do is reach out and have a conversation with your stationer.
